New Hope Is Not Just a Town in Pennsylvania

Well, besides that one—the only one I’ve actually been to—there is a New Hope, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis; a New Hope, New York; and Texas alone boasts five townships in the state so named, among a number of others elsewhere. Online, moreover, I found an article which declared the Pennsylvania version one of the fifteen best American small towns to live in. So, why all these New Hopes? My theory is as the Western Hemisphere’s Promised Land, the British North American colonies and later the United States, at least for non-Iberian Europeans and in time Asians, were seen as a place to get away from poverty and/or oppression back home and to start over with a chance to own land and move up the ladder socially and economically. It was the land of what became known as the American Dream, with opportunity for those willing and able to work hard...
I am writing this blog on November 5, 2025, the day after the off-year elections around the country. And my happiness over the results as a lifelong left-leaning Democrat helped me realize how weighted down I had been by the first ten months of Donald Trump’s second Presidential term. According to some, including President Trump’s critical niece, Uncle Donald had already been able to implement more than half the goals in Project 2025. Of course, like others, I’m guessing, I tried to suppress this grim reality by taking the advice of the Buddhist saying, customized to my situation: Before Trump, chop wood and carry water; after Trump chop wood and carry water. After all, we all managed to get through his first term and got a decent Democratic administration after that. Moreover, the MAGA President did manage to accomplish several really important things for the good of the country and beyond, assisted no doubt by the qualified professionals then surrounding him: Project Warp Speed, which got us and the world effective Covid vaccines in record time, and the Abraham Accords in the Israeli-Arabic Middle East, which begin to improve the political climate in the region. And even this time around, he has been able to start a process to end the Israel-Gaza War.

But late last night and even more early this morning, I read how New Jersey and Virginia had elected new Democratic governors, both women: only the first female state head for the latter, and the second, after Christie Whitman, a Republican, for the Garden State. In California, meanwhile, Proposition 50, enabling the state temporarily to create new voting districts to assure that up to five more U.S. House seats would go Democratic, passed with a sizable margin. Proposed by California’s charismatic governor, Gavin Newsome, the idea was to balance the five new Republican districts created at President Trump’s behest in Texas. Finally, in Detroit, the voters elected the city’s first female mayor, a Black woman named Mary Sheffield.

But the icing on the cake was unquestionably the election of Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old mayor-to-be of the country’s largest city, as New York’s first Asian American and Muslim head and Gotham’s youngest mayor-elect in a century, Mamdani’s energy, articulateness, and focus on pocketbook issues, as he put it, for all New Yorkers—like city-wide free buses and freezing rents for rent-controlled housing. So, I woke up this morning with a sense that things may be getting better. The sun had come out inside me and had started chasing my inner clouds away. Hooray!
