Thoughts on the Way

The Way you can talk about, the TAO TE CHING counsels, is not the real Way. Nevertheless, in one of the most famous proof texts in the New Testament, John 14:6, Jesus tells Doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (NRSV: Catholic Edition) Literal-minded Christians take this statement to mean only Christians will get to heaven. On the surface, itdoeslook like they have a point. But other interpretations require an understanding of metaphor.
