Three Tips for a Better Life

Last week my writing group asked me to lighten up the writing prompts. Too much death and dying, among other serious themes. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. This week I’ll spare you Latin-embellished deep thoughts too. Instead, even though January and New Year’s resolution time are past, how about three tips for better living? Go work out; twist and shout; and just get out. The first relates to one of my resolutions—to exercise regularly. While Cedar and I were still courting, we lived 15 minutes apart by foot. So I got at least 30 minutes of fast walking each day. Yet once I moved to her place last May, that regimen ended. Anyway, thanks to Medicare and the Silver Sneakers Program, in early January we both joined the local YMCA for free.  We are now attending a surprisingly challenging hour-long water-aerobics class three times a week and are starting to add other fitness activities too. As far as dancing goes, we don’t do it nearly enough but are planning on more. Last Monday, in fact, at our rock ‘n’ roll choir rehearsal, quite a few of us ended up boogying down. I felt breathless but exhilarated—a good feeling guaranteed to lower my worry-o-meter and my blood pressure. As for just getting out, that’s the trickiest but in some ways the most helpful tip. Variety is indeed the spice of life, and it’s way too easy to get stuck in front of the computer for hours at a time. Moving around, going out to the corner store, doing anything different, above all if it requires walking, will re-charge our batteries and help us accomplish more in less time. True Swiss cheese, in my experience, requires holes. For too long my life has been a thick, unaerated block. It’s time to yodel for more balance and air.

These are great tips. While you are at the YMCA take some time to enjoy the sauna for 15 minutes after the exercise and then finish up with an ice cold shower. That is a great recipe against colds and stress.

If you have legs, you can walk. You have no excuse not to exercise or at least do physical activities. I admire this couple because they find time and make a way to be fit. I would like to try water aerobics. It's good for your heart and safe from injuries because it has no impact on your bones and joints. For me, living a healthy lifestyle is not that hard to do. It is necessary for life longevity. Not to mention that working out improves our brain function and release our stress. Keep on moving, whether it is in the form of dancing or training in the gym.
